I have the same problem. On my box the unresponsiveness is also
connected to excessive hard drive access. It seems that when it happens,
files urlclassifier3.sqlite and urlclassifier3.sqlite-journal are being
accessed. I did some digging around the net and found this:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=402469. That might be
related?

Some people also made the problem disappear after disabling "Tell me if
the site I'm visiting..." from Preferences -> Security or by reducing
the number of days from Privacy -> History. I cleared the profile
altogether and haven't had the issue since. None of those are a real fix
though.
