The following should do it (unless I misunderstand your question):

1. Under Edit->Account Settings
2. Choose Server Settings for one of your email addresses.
3. There should be a section there title "Security Settings" which allows for TLS/SSL and secure login.

Have you got the latest T'bird update 2.0.0.12 from Ubuntu?
