I had a bit of a breakthrough.  Because of the current breakage with
gnome-settings-daemon, my GTK theme and metacity/compiz theme are
currently defaulting to some nonstandard values.  However, ff3 no longer
crashes with these default themes.

After gnome-settings-daemon is fixed and I can play around with the
themes, I'll see if I can characterize just which themes cause the the
crash and which don't.
