If you look at the top bar, it says something like:

username at gmail.com | Settings | X Version | Help | Sign out

If X==Older, you're using the newer version
if X==Newer you're using the older version.

The newer version is almost a complete backend rewrite with few user-
visible changes.

Also, I didn't specify this before, but I tried this on a clean profile
and in safe mode. Also (less pertinent here) it's present in both the
linux and windows versions. I have been unable to nail down whether the
bug is with gmail or with firefox (though I suspect firefox), which is
why i filed here rather than there.
