I've had this problem in both firefox 2 & ff 3 beta 2 to beta 4.

It does not seem to be a compiz issue, as it behaves the same with
compiz turned on and off.

Can you be more specific about "random things"? If you hold the right
mouse button down, it should keep the menu open.

This can easily be fixed by moving the menu up or to the left a few
pixels. Because it stays open, this should not be that difficult to
implement for someone familiar with ff development.
