Oh, this seems to be a duplicate of bug 182038. Showing only a part of
an image seems to be one flavour of it.

Adding the following option to the device section in your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf might solve the issue four you as it did for me:

Section "Device"
...
        Option      "AccelMethod" "EXA"
EndSection

I have an ATI Radeon Xpress 200 M (1002:5975).
