This is only true for the Firefox checkbox, right? I can unclick and
re-click Add-Ons and Search Engines since Synaptic doesn't handle those.
I can confirm that much as a usability bug.

** Changed in: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Confirmed

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: firefox
+ Summary: Updates handled by Synaptic are not greyed out in Firefox's
+ preferences

- I am using Ubuntu version 8.04.1 with Firefox 3 (updated as of 28 Sep
- 2008) and the "Preferences>Advanced>Update" options are not disabled
- initially. Once any of the options are unchecked, the corresponding
- field will gray-out and become inaccessible. Since these update options
- should be handled by Synaptic, it appears they should show disabled
- within Firefox and be grayed-out the first time they are viewed. With
- the way the options page works currently, there is no way to know which
- program is actually handling the updates.
+ Steps to reproduce:
+   1. Go to Edit -> Preferences
+ 2. Go to the Advanced section
+ 3. Go to the Updates tab
+   4. Uncheck Firefox
+
+ Expected Result:
+ Firefox checkbox and what it disables should have been disabled to begin with because Firefox doesn't handle its own updates (Synaptic does)
+
+ Actual Result:
+ Firefox checkbox and its corresponding options are only disabled after user manually unchecks it.
