I can confirm a very similar problem on Hardy firefox:

$ uname -a
Linux XXXXXXXXXXX 2.6.24-21-generic #1 SMP Mon Aug 25 17:32:09 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

Package: firefox-3.0
...
Architecture: i386
Version: 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3

I've attached a similar gdb dump.  However, things stop so severely that
I am not offered the chance to apply the backtrace.  This is with a new
default profile (no extensions added to this profile).

This does not crash on opening gmail and logging in. it does crash upon
clicking on an open message. I am filing this from flock which I had
lying around, and does not crash on opening gmail.
