Re-installing fixed the problem for me (intrepid beta amd64).

But I did try to reinstall from synaptic before reading this posts and
that did not work, then I turned off "visual effects" off and in the
meantime I found this bug-report. From there I reinstalled from terminal
with the code provided and worked fine.

Now It is working with "visual effects" on (I do not know if the "visual
effects is relevant at all).
