I also get this on a 8.04 running on Dell Latitude d610.  The only
workaround I have found is to exit Thunderbird (using the mouse), and
then just go back in.  But that is not a very good workaround.

Curious thing is that the problem is isolated to a particular message
reply window for me.  Even if I have other replies open, only one is
affecting.  But once it hits a new reply window, all new reply windows
front that point forward will have the problem.

I agree with fejes, it seems to happen if I type too quickly after
opening a reply window.
