It also affects me for a while (on gusty, hardy, ...).
Always with compiz enable.
On my two laptops: 
nvidia for the first:
glxinfo

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4

ati for the second.
fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.

OpenGL version string: 2.1.8087 Release
