Solved: it appears that swfdec AND flash-nonfree plugin were installed.
I don't know exactly how this happened but once I deleted the swfdec
app, flash began to work without issue. I suspect that when I was
prompted within Firefox to add in the plugin, it chose swfdec over the
flash-nonfree plugin.

However, everything was working prior to upgrade.
