I noticed that the problem occurred on my system when the 
'/home/user/.mozilla' directory was becoming quite large, possibly 
exceeding the size of the allotted offline cache size.

The way I solved the issue was to:
1) check I backed up my bookmarks (firefox won't allow you to backup to 
html...but I think you can copy the json files)
2) delete the '/home/user/.mozilla' directory, then
3) restart firefox.

All browser problems were resolved. There should be a solution to 
automatically cleaning up the cache. I do it manually from time to time 
under 'Tools>Clear Private Data'.
