Yeah, does not sound too good, then.

Did you build the computer or is it a brand computer? 
If it is a brand, could you give me the brand + model.
If you built it yourself, what sound card do you have, what motherboard do you have, how much ram?

Also, try this command from the command line:

lspci | grep audio

It should show you a line like this, this is the name of the detected
sound card:

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM
(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)


lspci will show you internal devices that are plugged into your computer (graphics, network and sound ...)

Did the sound work when you were running off the dvd?

You should create a forum topic about this, that way more people will
help you and people with the same problem will be able to solve it,
too.

You can also create a bug for this "no sound" issue, but we need to have
the exact model of the sound card. (command above) The installer should
have picked it up and apparently has not, bad!

The slow response problem needs a separate forum topic, we need to find
out why it is slow, before we can call it a bug.

I am sorry for what is happening here, it should just work out of the
box and it isn't ... :-(

Running off the DVD was excellent, that's why I decided to install it.
Every since the installation it takes forever to log on and then another
long span of time before any icons appear and I can do anything, and no
there is no welcoming sound starting up or logging on. thx
