Please try lightning-extension from the Ubuntu repos.  There seems to be 
an issue with the version from Mozilla in Karmic.  You should probably 
uninstall the version you have in Thunderbird 2 first.  Thanks.

Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Binary package hint: thunderbird

New Event and New Task buttons are not available.  Today, Week, Month, Multi-month buttons do not respond.  Only Day button shows the calendar, but I cannot add anything to it.
Running Ubuntu 9.10, Xfce 4 Desktop Environment version 4.6.1 (Xfce 4.6), and Thunderbird version 2.0.0.23 (20090817)
