Additional testing with my Karmic system indicates that the problem is
strongly coupled with screen-saver and Compiz.

5/5 attempts after screen-saver with compiz shows the problem.

The problem disappears when de-activating compiz (tested with two
screensaver activations), and re-appears when re-activating.
