Sorry, didn't answer your second question: "why does it need to be set
manually?"  I don't have an answer to that, nor have I used Windows or
Mac in many years, so someone else will have to speak to that.  I will
point out that Thunderbird is not the main focus of the community.  I
believe Evolution is, so you may have more luck with that piece of
software and nice default settings.
