I'm running Lucid 10.04 LTS on an old Pentium IV, 2.4GHz machine with an
Nvidia GeForce Ti 4200 card. I started experiencing this problem with
10.04beta - but not right away - and also after a fresh install of 10.04
after it was officially released. In 10.04beta, I was initially able to
install addons in Firefox, but after a while, they would not update
(Download error - 228). Now, with the official release, I have the same
problem right from the start with ANY addons or themes.

I've tried all the suggestions here and on the Mozilla website, but none
of them work. I can't even download the addons by right-clicking and
then saving them to disk. I've downloaded the addons using another
machine, but when I copy them to this computer, dragging and dropping
them to the Addons window doesn't work either.

The only thing that does seem to work is to enable to set
'extensions.hideInstallButton' to 'false' in about:config (i.e., to
enable the 'Install' button in the Addons window, and then to manually
install extensions that I've downloaded using another machine.
