I'm seeing this issue too, in firefox (I don't use thunderbird). If you
resize the text (CTRL+ / CTRL-) which characters are affected change.

In the attached example (3 screen shots cropped/spliced), original text
size the "u" characters are the problem. One size up, it's n and i
characters (although, interestingly, not all the i's are affected).
Bigger still and the r's go bad.
