Thanks for taking the time to report this. I use thunderbird multiple
times a day. The event you are experiencing is in fact the way it is
supposed to be operating. I agree that it is a little aggravating at
times. I am going to see if we can mark this item as "wishlist" and
hopefully get it the default behavior changed. Before we do that though
please run the following command in a terminal to upload more info about
your system.

apport-collect 666629
