There seems to have been some progress by the upstream developers. This bug filed against Core/Networking indicates that the fix has been released:

Note that the above bug references this Ubuntu bug for the same problem in Firefox:

That report states that "Starting with Ubuntu 11.04, Firefox is compiled
with gio. "
