Public bug reported:
I have recommended pre-installed Dell laptops to many new Ubuntu users.
One of them started to complain a few weeks ago that the start page of
Firefox is http://www.yahoo.com/?fr=dell_lin-home and it is impossible
to change.
Indeed, when I tested to change default search engine or URL of the home
page the UI of Firefox allows me to do it, but once Firefox is restarted
all those settings are lost and Yahoo comes back as the default search
engine and home page URL is set to http://www.yahoo.com/?fr=dell_lin-
home.
This is really bad, because the Finnish users in question really have no
interest in US-centric nonsense entertainment news from Yahoo and none
of the content is in Finnish.
I've deactivated the http://dell.archive.canonical.com/updates/
respository and de-installed the Dell packages that look safe to remove,
and I did delete ~/.mozilla/firefox to make sure it is really a system
wide problem that presists. I haven't found out what package injects
these behaviour in Firefox. What are the options, what can be done?
** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
