You did a  good job establishing a sense of place. I could really
envision the Hightower  and the frigid climb to the top… I even got cold
toes!  You also did a great job capturing the feel  of the culture
through the dialogue and actions of the characters  without resorting to
a bunch of exposition. The culture obviously has a strong Eastern Slavic
influence, and my  favorite  part of your piece is how you depict their
prevalent sense  of  dry, sarcastic  humor in the interactions between
Heet and Ivan.  I have friends from Belarus and  the Ukraine and you
were dead-on with  their style of wit! Also about their deprecating
exteriors wrapped around  good  and earnest  hearts.

There was  a lot here, and the story  is a slow build like the climb up
the tower itself.  At the end however, I think you  leave  the reader
hanging. You wrap  everything up well,  and there is  character
development  and  revelation… But to me it felt like there was a lot of
careful and well executed  build-up for an ending that was, well, just
an ending. It didn’t  grab me and fill me with  sense of completion on
par with  the prose leading up to it. Maybe it’s just me, but  I was
expecting a greater revelation about things than was delivered. I
needed more “pop”.

I  like your style and this is  a good  showcase of talent, keep at it!
This was a  fun read!
