Derek Christensen gave more information on the question:
Mario,
Thanks for the advice. I followed your suggestion and updated linux-
ubuntu-modules tonight, since there was a new package up. Looked
promising, as it prompted me for my remote type on install and added
lines to my hardware.conf file. But I'm still unable to get it going.
My syslog still logs the messages I posted earlier.
I believe my problem is that I don't have a device at /dev/lirc.
After reading the docs on lirc.org, I see that my earlier experiment of
symlinking lirc to lircd (or setting it in the hardware.conf file) was
not a good idea, since they are serve separate functions.
One question...since the modules are built into the kernel, should the
LOAD_MODULES parameter in the hardware.conf file be set to true or
false?
I'm going to try some other ideas tonight and will probably post
something to the lirc mailing list tomorrow if nothing works. Any
suggestions would be thankfully welcomed.
Thanks,
Derek
