For the record, I've now upgraded to 0.25 (2 front ends and a back end). 
The backend my.cnf file has bind-address=127.0.0.1 once again, but 
things are working. I don't know the workings of myth well enough to 
explain why, but the problem appears to be limited to version 0.24. My 
guess is that in 0.25, the front ends are no longer accessing the mysql 
database on the backend directly.
