intenta esto:

Presiona ALT+F2
Abre "gnome-terminal"

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment -y
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-desktop-environment

Si no te funciona intenta creando un nuevo usuario e inicia sesión con ese:
sudo adduser foo

Deberías considerar hacer una instalación limpia.
