Hi Peter,

Do you have Compiz enabled? I am just in the process of dist upgrading 
now, but when I installed Compiz before it was really system intensive.

Your next place to check would be to have a look at what processes are 
actually taking up those cycles with either the System Monitor ('System 
-> Admin -> System Monitor' for Gnome), or 'top' at the command line. If 
you do not know what the processes are that are using the CPU, some one 
here is bound to be able to help.
