In general, recording network usage isn't a simple task. You need to
identify the one place on your network that is capable of seeing all
the traffic going out ... you didn't mention a firewall, so it will
probably be your adsl modem (on slingshot/callplus, right?) ... and
that's unlikely to have the software you need.
One option would be to go get a small PC and install a home firewall
on it, like IPCop, and install that between the modem & the rest of
the network (it'll need two network interfaces of course); and then
get a reporting addon to see the totals and perhaps control limits,
bandwidthd might be what you want, or ntop.
This isn't specifically an Ubuntu question, so you might get a wider
set of responses by asking on another mailing list, such as NZLUG.
