And it definitely does it? 1280x800 is a fairly common panel resolution
on larger laptops, but normally the panel will be reporting the
resolutions it can handle and X will be displaying those.
Here's my current set, with nothing plugged into the VGA or DVI ports:
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1440 x 900, maximum 3360 x 2048
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
0mm x 0mm
1440x900 60.0*+
1280x854 59.9
1360x768 59.8
1280x800 59.8
1152x864 60.0
1280x720 59.9
1152x768 59.8
1024x768 60.0 59.9
800x600 60.3 59.9
640x480 59.9 59.4
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
I suppose it could be an out of date BIOS, if it really does do a higher
resolution.
What's the exact model number? I know you said nx6320, but that covers
quite a range of actual models and resolutions - there should be a more
specific model number on a sticker on the bottom somewhere.
Cheers,
Andrew.
