James, could you please forward this issue to Debian then? python-gtk2
is still deprecated and in my opinion should not be an alternate
dependency. python-qt4 and python3-pyqt4 are targeted for removal too
before the release of Debian 10 "Buster". See
https://bugs.debian.org/875109

The Debian GNOME team hasn't gotten around to filing pygtk2 deprecation
bugs yet.

Title:
python-pyperclip depends on pygtk2 which is deprecated

Status in python-pyperclip package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
python-pyperclip is one of three packages keeping pygtk2 in Ubuntu
main. (The other two are ibus-sunpinyin and system-config-kickstart)

pygtk has been unmaintained upstream since around 2011. The way
forward is to port python-pyperclip to use GObject Introspection
bindings. This also requires porting to GTK3.

For more information on GObject Introspection see:
  https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GObjectIntrospection
  https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/PyGObject
