Hi Luciano,

Thanks for taking the time to look at this.

I'm afraid I do not quite follow your reasoning. If I install the
package today I receive the list of OUI's as they are assigned by the
IEEE as of today. Fast forward a couple of years from now I will start
to see devices in my network with OUI's which are unlisted according to
the files on my local system, but were in fact assigned by IEEE in the
meantime.

I agree that the files do not need to be updated frequently, but
currently they are _never_ updated, which makes them unreliable.

Kind regards,
Martin

Title:
ieee-data no longer updates OUI data

Status in ieee-data package in Ubuntu:
  Opinion

Bug description:
  Hello,

  As mentioned in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=826104#10 the monthly cronjob to fetch new OUI
data from standards.ieee.org was removed. While this resolves the
denial of service attack on the IEEE website, the solution of no
longer updating the files means over time they become outdated (unless
the package is re-installed or /usr/bin/update-ieee-data is run
  manually).

This could be solved by placing the ieee-data cronjob in /etc/cron.d
with a random day and time of the month, or by pushing a package
update whenever the IEEE website contains new data.

  Kind regards,
  Martin
