Do you really want to recompile postgresql yourself?

You'll have to add source URIs to /etc/apt/sources.list to grab source
and generate your own .deb. This will help make your personally
compiled package integrated into the Debian package management system
and help ease on upgrades as well.

Otherwise, it's a simple apt-get away. For offline mode downloading,
you can look at the apt-zip package.

Yes. The default installation is aimed at "mortals". Developers get to
shoot themselves in their feet if they want to. :)
