Can you post what is in /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Can you also test what would happen if you changed:
Driver "nvidia"
in the Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf to:
Driver "nv"
then try to restart gdm:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
I suspect that your 686 kernel doesn't have the nvidia kernel module
included. I'm making a guess based on my experience with nvidia cards
and new kernels in Debian since I currently don't run Ubuntu on the x86
platform.
