Is there really /dev/sda0? I think /dev/sda5 is not your external disk. I
think it's sda1, sda2, sda3, sda4 <sda5>. sda5 is the logical partition
inside the extended partition sda4.

sda becomes hda? From this layout, hda1, hda2, hda3 <hda5>, hda4.
hard disk can only contain 4 primary partitions. so you have to create one
extended partition to contain logical partitions if you want to have
multiple partitions. You should plan the layout of your hard disk before
going to install two OS in one hard disk.
What you can do now is to use the live cd to recover your data. first, you
must determine which is the drive c and drive d. hda1 is the drive c and
hda4 is the drive d. you must mount it using the correct filesystem type,
ntfs. you can use ntfs-3g or other ntfs tools. once it is mounted, you can
copy your precious data from there to any device that you can attach and
mount in your PC. then after that, reinstall windows if necessary, then
ubuntu.
hope that gives you an idea.
