The other aspect of desktop integration is getting Thunderbird to play
nice with Evolution-Data-Server for things like calendar items from
Lightning in the Date/Time indicator applet, and global address book so
that for example, the contacts picker in the Send To context menu in
Nautilus actually has contacts in it that are available in Thunderbird.
Evolution Mirror is a step towards the calendar side:

It's currently experimental and one-way only and relies heavily on
Python, but it does work. I don't know if there are other solutions
available.
I've been working on Hedera (shameless plug) to allow Thunderbird to
work with Desktopcouch (and, by extension, Ubuntu One) for contacts:

Clearly this isn't E-D-S, but I spoke in some depth with Mike Conley of
Mozilla at UDS and he's working hard to make it much easier to add
custom address book back-ends - Hedera will benefit greatly from this
and should provide a kick start for E-D-S integration too, but I could
use some help.
