I don't think I've ever had an upgrade go flawlessly either. There's
always SOMETHING that messes up...I finally seem to have gotten in the
habit of reinstalling every other version or better. I really wish
there was a way to ensure a smoother upgrade...in theory it all makes
sense, but then I'd have all sorts of weird things happening, like
mplayer's keyboard shortcuts being randomly remapped to crazy things
in the tty and vlc not working in the tty. One time I had Compiz break
in a bunch of weird ways too, culminating in a "hole" on the desktop.
Lots of other misc weird things too. It's a complicated beast, I guess.
