The Ocelot has Landed!

My first impression is less than stellar. Story-time is below, brief
summary for the busy after.
Let's do a play-by-play to see the thought process here. I went the
upgrade route, noted that some apps would be uninstalled, took notes,
no big deal, figure I'll purge the ol' system of outdated crap,
reinstall as I notice problems, if any. Reasonable plan. It finally
finishes its thing and asks me to reboot. I note that the text on GRUB
is a little smaller than I'd like, and I have a mysterious new
"DOS/Win3.1" partition that is most likely Windows 7's "SYSTEM"
partition, so no big deal, even if it is a little annoying. I move on,
kill the splash screen so I can watch for errors...and see that
bitlbee's version of otr is broken; later testing reveals bitlbee
isn't even running. Alright, may as well see what the new DM is
like--oh hey, GDM. Right then. Next stop, Unity...only to find that
the panel is on the left monitor, which is clearly not the right
monitor nor is it the primary monitor. Extremely annoying. Okay, let's
try the new dash...which doesn't let me type unless I hold the keys or
smash them all around randomly and then it might work, 50/50 shot.
Right then, let's get on Pidgin so I can rant about how much this
sucks. Oh wait, PIDGIN IS DOING THE SAME THING AS THE DASH. Okay,
let's see if it's a keyboard problem by typing around in a
terminal...nope. Terminal's fine. May as well install lightdm while
I'm here (which, I have to say, is gorgeous) and those other
packages...except they don't exist. No emerald or snes9x-gtk for me!
How about that bespin thing for KWin? Haha no. Rutebook? Please. That
stuff is clearly for suckers. Alright, let's boot up Conky...great,
HDDTemp got uninstalled. How about irssi? Oh hey, random error
messages that never showed up before. Guess they updated things just
to spite me. Jerks. Okay, let's reboot and see if that fixes anything
after checking for upgrades. Not really. LightDM is pretty though. May
as well try the tty...and finch along with it. Oh hey, finch hates me
and refuses to move windows left at anything faster than a snail's
pace, though right is like a freight train. Awesome. Let's try screen
and see if its nifty asciiquarium "screensaver" works. Haha no,
somehow the obscure libraries it needs are missing. Stupid me.
Give up, resign self to the very likely possibility of needing a
re-install. Poke around a bit more just for kicks, notice there's no
screensavers and the Control Centre has been dumbed down something
fierce. Give up, go do homework while complaining on Facebook.
In short: Dash refuses to work as advertised, Pidgin was messing up,
Unity launcher is on the wrong monitor, random things are messed up,
random packages are missing from the repos despite several clearly
having entries despite not being installable, and GNOME 3 makes me
sad. How's that for a first impressions story? I'd say pretty
disappointing myself. =/
