Please help me

I am very much new to Ubuntu. Now after 2 upgrades I have 12.04 LTS. At the
time of installation something bad happened and the main screen
disappeared. After few hours assuming that it would have been finished, I
shut down my Laptop, which is an old one now and does not have the option
in BIOS to boot from CD/ USB.
Now I am facing a big problem, I do not have Ubuntu icon or any other icon
in my Ubuntu,nothing comes in search when I write something in Dash home. I
figured out how to reboot from terminal but it is VERY FRUSTRATING for me.
Please help me to find all these icons. I will be very very grateful to you.
