as for the dell issue with 12.04 , mine is an dell XPS 15 and its working
smooth , even with bumble-bee i can use my optimus as if its on windows :)
, then many things like  highly efficient power management(i get up-to 7
hrs of battery with basic text based work with unity 3d in !!!), audio
recording, graphics, as im a musician also ive done loads of recordings
without any crashes or bugs in 12.04, so please do check what your problem
is with 12.04 because i think it must be from your side rather than
Ubuntu's issue, the only thing that is irritating with 12.04 is that its
package manager , update manager crashes every time and then i have to
manually delete the apt-lists and update it again which sometimes also
mysteriously goes away with system restart !!!
