Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS x86_64 - gnome-software always crashing

Had a look in /var/crash, found a 19MB crash report which included a core
dump (uuencoded, I think).

file command reported this:-
_usr_bin_gnome-software.1000.crash: ASCII text, with very long lines
