So this is working for me again now. If I use it from recovery mode, then I don't get the crashes I was seeing before that are unrelated to this problem. Trying to flash from recovery mode also makes this change unnecessary though, but it might be more predictable to look for the free space by mountpoint instead. I'll leave it up to others whether you want to take this or not.
