@Dan: I know that I did NOT explicitly install
 network-manager-openvpn-gnome 

However, I did install:
network-manager-openvpn

In previous versions of Ubuntu, installing network-manager-openvpn only
would ultimately get the Open VPN options into the Applet/Indicator.

Currently, I've downgraded to 14.04.4. and cannot immediately test to
see if installing network-manager-openvpn-gnome will work. Is it working
for you?
