I built this in my PPA and confirmed both fixes work as expected.

I agree with the approach taken in lp1977630-fix_machinectl_pull_tar.patch. Thanks for figuring out the minimal changes needed to make this work.

One minor comment is that we prefer gbp dch to be used to edit the changelog, but we can fix that on merge.
