I have tested this with an upgrade from Kinetic to Lunar after installing evdi-dkms, openvpn-dco-dkms, and rtl8812au-dkms (chosen somewhat arbitrarily). In this test, rtl8812au failed to build[1] (though the error is a bit odd, so if someone could inspect that to make sure it's not a problem with my patch that would be helpful), but the other two succeeded and are installed again at the end of the upgrade. I don't *think* rtl8812au caused problems when I tried an upgrade to Lunar with that module enabled, without my patch.

make ARCH=x86_64 CROSS_COMPILE= -C /lib/modules/5.19.0-45-generic/build M=/var/lib/dkms/rtl8812au/4.3.8.12175.20140902+dfsg/build modules
make[1]: *** /lib/modules/5.19.0-45-generic/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [Makefile:1457: modules] Error 2

Why is it looking for /lib/modules/5.19.0-45-generic/?
