Thanks for digging into this. I think your solution makes sense in the context of the Jammy version of systemd. I have not tested yet myself, but from reading your explanation and diving into the code again, I agree with the patch.

I will test this alongside the follow-on patch referenced in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/2052137 so that we can have a complete fix, and acceptable SRU.
