Hmm when I was playing with this, I did something like this instead https://git.launchpad.net/~mwhudson/livecd-rootfs/+git/livecd-rootfs/commit/?id=94cb68d47530a564060155f985f963f59786809f -- which would imply switching from using PROJECT=ubuntu-core-desktop to PROJECT=ubuntu-core-installer / SUBPROJECT=desktop (and then presumably deleting all the code for ubuntu-core-desktop). It's a bit hard to see if that branch of mine has exactly the same effect as your changes here but it feels like something like that would be a bit less duplication of effort?
