So hmm. I may have given you some bad advice / told some lies / been generally confused about how this is "supposed" to be handled. Were you using CDIMAGE_LOCAL_LIVEFS_ARTIFACTS to test this?
ubuntu-cdimage has a file "etc/cdimage-to-livecd-rootfs-map" that I think can be used to influence which artifact names ubuntu-cdimage looks -- or rather looked for. And that file has an entry for ubuntu-core-desktop already! But! The CDIMAGE_LOCAL_LIVEFS_ARTIFACTS code path does not use this file, it just looks for files with .${PROJECT}. in the name. Oops.
Another relevant fact is that the code I added recently to just download all the livefs artifacts directly (currently only used for plucky) doesn't care about the content of the names at all, it just splits on . and throws the first two parts away.
So, I'm sorry but I don't think this is needed.
