Binary package hint: libpam-smbpass

I found out that I could not change my password (as root) with passwd when the smb.conf options    
   passdb backend = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
was set.

and:
an 'adduser <username>' command created an entry in /etc/shaddow but with missing encrypted password.

this also affects login (of existing users), so I guess some libpam-
smbpass bug prevent the passwd program from correctly processing the
password input.

message from auth.log
passwd[18790]: pam_smbpass(passwd:chauthtok): unrecognized option [missingok]

maybe a similar bug:

but with the following (similar) smb.conf option things worked:
   smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
