I too received the "subprocess new pre-removal script returned error
exit status 1" upon trying to install this package.
It appears that the /etc/init.d/mysql script fails to shutdown mysql (even from the commandline).
As a workaround, I issued 'mysqladmin shutdown' and the mysql package
installed without the 'subprocess new pre-removal script returned error
exit status 1' error message.
When I attempted to re-start mysqld using the /etc/init.d/mysql script,
I received the following errors (although mysqld did start):
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' (using password: YES)'
root at cyph:~# ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
