I've tried unsuccessfully to reproduce the setup, works for me under Intrepid.

Just to be sure, could you please give me the output of the following command:
testparm -v -s | grep usershare
Then you can uncomment (by removing leading ";") the following line in /etc/samba/smb.conf:
;   usershare max shares = 100
and try smbclient //nkbp/public again...
